In 1913, Sumitomo Chemical was founded with the purpose of producing fertilizers from sulfur dioxide, which was a byproduct of smelting operations at the Besshi copper mine in Niihama, Ehime Prefecture. The company aimed to address the environmental issues caused by these emissions.
Now, the Sumitomo Chemical Group operates in five sectors: Essential Chemicals & Plastics, Energy & Functional Materials, IT-related Chemicals, Health & Crop Sciences, and Pharmaceuticals. Its extensive range of products is distributed worldwide, supporting various industries and enhancing people’s everyday lives.
